Mauzoleum Jałowiec

An abandoned graveyard in Poland. I visited it during trip in March 2021.

The Mausoleum in Jałowiec was built in 1871 as the burial place of Baron Robert Karl von Lachmann-Falkenau, the only son and heir of the von Lachmann family. The young baron was killed at the age of 23 during the Battle of Mars-la-Tour in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. Designed by the renowned architect Carl Johann Lüdecke, the neo-Gothic monument combines funerary architecture with the surrounding park landscape. Originally intended as a family mausoleum, it became one of the most remarkable examples of sepulchral art in Lower Silesia and a lasting symbol of a family’s grief after the loss of their only heir.
